About This Station
![]() The station is powered by an Oregon Scientific WMR100NA weather station. The data is collected from the weather station nearly continuously and the site is updated every 3 seconds. This site and its data is collected using Weather Display Software. The station comprises of an anemometer, rain gauge and a thermo-hydro sensor situated in optimal positions for highest accuracy possible. I shielded the temp/humidity sensor in a homemade radiation shield (April, 2009) to improve accuracy and reduce solar interference. The anemometer is placed as well as it can be on my site at the moment - I can't really improve it without moving it up to the roof and that's a project I'm just not up for right now. |
About Hopkinton![]()
Hopkinton is a hilly and rocky scenic town with several lakes nestled in the center of Massachusetts. The town is most famously known as the start of the Boston Marathon. Each year thousands of runners flock to this otherwise small town of 14,000 and commence the 26 mile run to Copley Square in Boston. ![]() The first settlers to the Hopkinton area were probably Rev. John Eliot and a band of praying Indians in 1660. However, the town was formerly established after Edward Hopkins, a colonial governor of Connecticut, left a substantial legacy to Harvard College. The trustees of the legacy used some of the money to purchase 25,000 acres from Indians in 1710 and leased the land to settlers for a penny an acre. Eventually the land was given to the original settlers and the town was incorporated on December 13, 1715 and named for its colonial benefactor. The first town meeting took place on March 24, 1724 with thirty voters present in the Price Mansion House (which is now simply The Manor House). During the 1800’s Hopkinton became a leading clothing and shoe manufacturing town. Unfortunately several serious fires occurred in 1876, 1882, and 1900 destroying many of the factories. The fires, coupled with migration of these industries to other areas of the country, led to Hopkinton's decline as an industrial town. Today, Hopkinton is a residential community with access to Boston via highway and commuter rail. With the building of Interstate Route 495 in 1967, various new industries have located in and around the South Street area. Hopkinton is home to EMC Corporation, an information technology company and one of Massachusetts largest employers. Hopkinton Highlands is a small, friendly neighborhood built around 2000, tucked around Saddle Hill in the northern section of the town. |
